Acai is a fruit from the Acai palm, native to the Amazon rainforest. It produces fruit that is blueberry sized deep red to purple in colour. The fresh fruit is not seen in the US, as the fruit breaks down very quickly, so cannot withstand transport. This small fruit contains high levels of antioxidants (particularly Anthocyanins) however; they are unstable and degrade quickly. The berry is almost 90% seed which is rich in amino acids. It is thought to have anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties.
